International continental drilling programs

The latter was damaged slightly during the tsunami on March 11, , but is meanwhile again being used for research. International Continental Drilling Program ICDP : ICDP is a land-based drilling program in which questions about natural catastrophes, volcanic activity, earthquakes and climate change are being investigated.

It is an internationally lead geoscientific program that deals with fundamental geoscientific problems of global importance. In ICDP these problems are carefully researched by international teams of scientists in carefully selected locations.

The program represents all the geosciences and is internationally and nationally evaluated. Continental geography is known in much more detail than that of the oceans. Geothermal energy can be tapped from the Earth's natural heat at volcanoes or mantle plumes. Holes drilled into a subsurface geothermal system, or in volcanic areas, can drive turbines and generate electrical power.

Drilling can help identify and develop increasingly sparse natural resources, e. Most of the erosion and deposition of sediments is culminating along the plate margins.

This may form deposits of georesources, accessible only by drilling. Active faulting is by far the most common earthquake-generating process. However, little is known on fault processes. Only deep drilling provides access to seismogenic zones for monitoring and to retrieve samples from there. Volcanic eruptions are one of Earth's most dramatic and violent agents of change. Powerful explosive eruptions can drastically alter land and water for tens of kilometers around a volcano.

Some volcanoes exhibit precursory unrest that if detected, e. Currently ca. Drill cores yield information on the subsurface structures, and provide ground-truth for geophysical studies. Plate margins are areas where the most life-threatening geological phenomena occurs.

Accompanying ocean-margin geohazards include tsunamis, landslides, powerful volcanic eruptions, and other threats. Scientific drilling has a high potential for risk-mitigation studies, and must be an integral and indispensable part of this effort.

For details see the workshop announcement on the DDTB project website. Deadline for application submission: February 1, The international exchange of results as well as the transnational cooperation in this area should form an important building block for the responsible management of the earth's environment and resources.

Organs of the ICDP are an Assembly of Governors , which exercises financial and scientific supervision and makes fundamental decisions on alignment, an Executive Committee , which is responsible for program and financial planning and reports to the Board of Governors, and an academic committee Advisory group Science Advisory group , which carries out the scientific evaluation of proposed projects, for which it may use also external experts, and creates from it a list of priorities on scientific principles.

An operational support group , which is provided by the German Research Center for Geosciences , is assigned to the executive committee for the management of current business. Source Authors.
